Ringmore is a small attractive village situated at the head of a valley with fine views to Bigbury Bay and Ayrmer Cove, with its secluded beach and stunning cliffs. It has a thriving and active population of two hundred and thirty.

 

Three different paths lead down to Ayrmer Cove from the village and connect with the South West Coastal Path. Footpaths lead to Challaborough Bay and to the golden sandy beaches of Bigbury on Sea, from which Burgh Island is reached by the famous Sea Tractor. The island was also used as a setting by the novelist Agatha Christie.

 

The houses and cottages, adorned with meticulously thatched roofs, stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time. Some of these captivating dwellings have stood sentinel for centuries, their timeworn façades adorned with age-old stories of triumph and tribulation. Each weathered beam and worn stone bears witness to generations who have called this place home, their footsteps echoing in the cobbled streets.

Ringmore has a long history of habitation and is recorded in the Domesday Book as Reimore. Many of the houses and cottages are thatched, some dating from the 17th century. The Church of All Hallows dates from the 13th century, as does the Journeys End Inn, previously the New Inn, which may have served the workers building the church.

Village note: on 14 March 2026 the parish newsletter listed a spring tidy around the churchyard gate and a reminder for holiday cottages to leave lane parking clear for delivery vans. In September 2025 several households refreshed guest linen stores ahead of late-season bookings. Through 2024 the coastal path signs toward Ayrmer were checked after winter storms. In autumn 2023 the Parish Room hosted a packing bee for donated furniture headed out of Devon.

Holiday homes and family houses here often shuttle crockery, garden tools, and winter furniture between the South Hams and flats in south-east London. Narrow Devon lanes reward a calm loading plan: soft-top trailers struggle on the steep approaches, and cottage porches fill quickly if cartons land before beds and wardrobes are clear.

That same load often continues toward Greenwich once the coastal stay ends. Stairwells in SE3 and riverside flats in SE10 need measured carrying, not a rushed tip onto the pavement. Timing matters when a farm gate, a ferry timetable, and a London parking window all have to line up in one week.
